Broadway Plan Emerging Directions: Introduction and Context

Thank you for your question. The Broadway Plan will be planning for as an efficient interconnected transportation system that considers walking, rolling, cycling, and driving. Today, over 55% of local residents already walk, bike, or take transit to work. The Broadway Plan will look to achieve the Climate Emergency Action Plan goal to further increase the use of the sustainable modes of travel in the Broadway area. That being said, we understand that it is essential to ensure safe vehicle access to key destinations and loading, pick-up/drop-off spaces and parking are available at important locations. With the Broadway subway, we expect there will be more people using transit as it will be much more convenient and reliable than today, and as a result there will be fewer vehicles along Broadway. Therefore, vehicle speeds are expected to be similar to what we saw pre-pandemic. As design work continues on Broadway, we will look at where loading, pick-up/drop-off spaces, and parking are needed, and balancing these needs with the need to accommodate other public uses such as street trees, green infrastructure, parklets, and patios.

HI Pat,

The Broadway Plan study area ends at Vine (doesn't go towards Macdonald). The areas north of Broadway between Arbutus and Vine are primarily residential with the exception of the commercial along 4th Ave and existing small neighbourhood retail. We are exploring strategic opportunities for  adding neighbourhood retail like small cafes, small convenience stores and other similar businesses at strategic locations. Hello,

The City is partnering with the Province of BC to build more supportive housing across Vancouver, including a proposed development at West 8^th and Arbutus. This project is still in the early stages and there will be a rezoning process which will include opportunities for public input before an application is made and a Public Hearing takes place. Hello Patrick,

Planning for the West of Vine area of Kitsilano and West Point Grey (including 10th Ave. west of Alma) will occur through the Vancouver Plan, as part of the Complete Neighbourhoods work, as well as future area planning if an extension of the Subway from Arbutus to UBC is approved. 

In the meantime, an Interim Rezoning Policy (IRP) and Development Contribution Expectation (DCE) Policy for West of Vine are in place until a plan is completed for that area. These policies are intended to limit speculation and to not pre-empt or divert the future area planning process.
