Help us make Gastown’s unique streets, laneways and public spaces more vibrant and people-friendly!

Gastown is situated on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. It is an important heritage district and popular destination in Vancouver. Many of the streets and public spaces in Gastown are in need of repair and rehabilitation, and we are exploring pedestrianizing areas of this neighbourhood to support vibrant public life.

In response to Council direction [PDF, 0.2MB], staff are creating a plan that will guide how to:

  • Establish a vibrant, people-focused Gastown with enhanced gathering places, streets, and laneways to support a range of activities.
  • Pedestrianize Water Street, seasonally or year-round, starting with a pedestrian pilot in summer 2024.
  • Improve the street network, including walking, cycling, transit and vehicle connections and consideration of Cordova as a two-way street.
  • Advance Reconciliation with the local Nations and support their visibility on their lands.
  • Evolve and deepen the unique heritage feel of the area, including improved street materials and amenities.
  • Identify phased project timing and funding.

What's next

In spring 2026, we'll bring the Gastown Public Spaces Plan to Council to guide future renewal and investment in the neighbourhood.

The plan is informed by learnings from both summer pilots, public engagement, ongoing partnerships with local Nations, and early planning and design work completed with the consultant team and the Gastown Business Improvement Society.

The plan will serve as a framework and outline that:

  • Establishes a long-term, unified vision for key streets and public spaces to make Gastown more people and pedestrian friendly
  • Identifies key directions for public space, transportation, local Nations visibility, heritage, and street materials
  • Builds on and refine summer pedestrian zones for the future

    Gastown nằm trên các lãnh thổ truyền thống không được nhượng của các Quốc gia Musqueam, Squamish và Tsleil-Waututh. Đây là khu di sản quan trọng và là điểm đến nổi tiếng ở Vancouver. Nhiều đường phố và không gian công cộng ở Gastown đang cần được sửa chữa và phục hồi, và chúng tôi cũng đang xem xét việc biến các khu vực trong khu phố này thành những nơi dành cho người đi bộ để hỗ trợ cho cuộc sống công cộng sôi động.

    Đáp ứng với chỉ đạo của (Council direction), nhân viên thành phố đang lập ra một kế hoạch để sẽ hướng dẫn cách:

    • Biến đường Water Street thành đường cho người đi bộ (pedestrianize) theo mùa hoặc suốt năm, bắt đầu bằng một thử nghiệm vào mùa hè năm 2024
    • Cải thiện mạng lưới đường phố để hỗ trợ một con đường Water St dành cho người đi bộ, gồm cả đi bộ, xe đạp, xe công cộng hoặc các phương tiện giao thông
    • Cải thiện các địa điểm tụ tập, đường phố và hẻm, ngõ của Gastown để giúp cho nhiều hoạt động
    • Thúc đẩy việc hòa giải với các Quốc gia bản địa (First Nations) và thiết lập sự có mặt (visibility) của họ trên vùng đất của họ
    • Phát triển và làm sâu đậm thêm cảm giác di sản độc đáo của khu vực, bao gồm cải tiến các vật liệu và tiện nghi trên đường phố

    Khảo sát Doanh nghiệp

    Chúng tôi muốn biết thêm về nhu cầu lên xuống hàng hóa và ra vào của doanh nghiệp hoặc khu nhà (strata) của quý vị. Điều này sẽ giúp chúng tôi phát triển quy hoạch không gian công cộng và lên kế hoạch biến Water Street thành đường cho người đi bộ theo mùa hoặc quanh năm, bắt đầu với một thí điểm vào mùa hè năm 2024.
