If bicycles are using our roadways, they should be licenced to make our roads safer & create a new source of revenue.
We are not in favor of disrupting traffic & parking to allow bicycles who do not have insurance to take away our vehicle lanes! Bicycles can use the bike paths along the sea wall...it is already divided for pedestrians & bicycles! However, we don't understand how we can lose our Eastbound lane along Beach Ave. to bicycles! As motorists who pay taxes & insurance to use our roadways, we are very much opposed to bicycles taking over vehicle lanes & using those lanes for free! Bicycles are not licenced, nor do they carry insurance. The City of Vancouver has spent millions on the vast network of bicycle lanes that don't require licencing or insurance but if a bicycle rider insists on riding on our roads...they should be licenced & pay insurance. In light of the recent assault on VPD officers by an aggressive cyclist who tried to outrun the police due to a traffic infraction, we have a suggestion that could help make our roadways safer. We are writing to you with an idea that we think could help improve the City's revenue with regards to Bicycles sharing our roadways with cars. As motorists who pay vehicle insurance for the privilege of driving on our roads, we are concerned about the lack of enforcement & rules pertaining to bicycles. We just don't see the logic in closing lanes & parking, to make way for bicycles resulting in the loss of more businesses & revenue. Bicycles do not carry insurance yet they share our roads weaving in & out between vehicles while ignoring red lights & even riding the wrong way on one way streets. What happens when a bicycle without insurance rides too close to your car & scratches your paint? Since the bike has no plates he can’t be found! The bicycle rider has no responsibility as he has no insurance, yet it's fine for them to share the road for free...even though Vancouver has created a vast network of bicycle lanes! If we licensed the bikes using the road & fined these people for traffic infractions we would create a new source of revenue & would not have to raise transit fares or gas tax! We could issue small license plates like the motorcycle plates! Could you please consider our idea to make our roadways safer & also generate new revenue for our city. We would appreciate your feedback! Let’s work to make our roads safer for everyone! Let the bicycles use the vast network of bicycle lanes that have been built for them, but if they want to use our vehicle roadways, they should be licensed & paying their part for upkeep. They shouldn't be using our roadways for free! During this Covid pandemic, the eastbound lanes along Beach Ave. have been closed to vehicle traffic to allow bicycles the use of our roadways & depriving the insured drivers who pay taxes & insurance to use the road, from using the roads that we pay for. Because of uninsured bicycles taking over our roads, we have lost parking spots, businesses, & vehicle lanes.
